East Surrey Council reveals in-house brand identity ahead of 2027 launch
Design
Design Week
East Surrey Council developed its new brand identity in-house using six local authority teams to avoid taxpayer costs.
What: The Council's branding, launching April 2027, utilizes Lexend typography and a geometric leaf-based mark. Assets will be replaced incrementally as existing infrastructure reaches end-of-life to minimize costs.
Why it matters: The approach demonstrates how public sector entities can manage design transitions through long-term, staged implementation rather than expensive, immediate rebranding.
Original article
East Surrey Council's new identity was developed entirely in-house by designers from six local authorities at no additional cost to taxpayers ahead of the authority's April 2027 launch. The selected mark uses layered leaf-like forms to reference the region's contours and countryside while hiding a lowercase “e,” with colors representing woodland, countryside, community, waterways, and heritage, and Lexend providing accessible primary typography. The identity will be introduced gradually as existing signage, vehicles, and other assets reach scheduled replacement points, minimizing waste and transition costs.
